EIFS v. Stucco: Energy and More

After catching an article by Aurel Ambarus Why Property owners Should Choose EIFS over Stucco, I wanted to add some additional commentary to support his opinion. Some people think EIFS is stucco, and will even call it “another-type” of stucco; it’s not actually accurate though.  Though EIFS can resemble stucco, it can also resemble brick, limestone, and even metallic finishes.  EIFS has superior traits for several reasons beyond just the variety of facades.

Energy Efficiency Benefits

As I said in the last post, the energy efficiency benefits of EIFS will help you save money on your energy bills. The global warming impact and carbon footprint of EIFS is 3 times smaller than stucco and to transport 25,000 square feet of the material, EIFS requires 6 times less than tractor trailer trucks than stucco. EIFS gives you both upfront and down the road benefits that aren’t offered by other exterior claddings.

Aurel Ambarus makes some great additional points in his article.

Many home owners who choose stucco will see that they wind up spending considerably more on padding than whenever they had opted regarding EIFS originally. EIFS, is convinced Aurel Ambarus, can be an reasonably priced way for house owners to get the look of stucco and keep their vitality bill along and delivering their home with the proper padding. … Additionally, when appropriately installed, EIFS is actually terrific to keep moisture outside the house having its waterproof layout. Though many people whine that EIFS draws in moisture versus a house, whenever properly mounted this should not be an issue. When a house owner hires a certified professional such as Aurel Ambarus, the humidity issue is almost never a problem.

Great point about “moisture” since research conducted by the Oak Ridge National Laboratory and supported by the Department of Energy, has validated that EIFS are the “best performing cladding” in relation to thermal and moisture control when compared to brick, stucco, and cementitious fiberboard siding.
